As Cardiffians may have noticed, one of the City's treasured beauty spots, Llanishen Reservoir, is under threat from Western Power. Constructed in 1884, the Llanishen reservoir was completed just in time to see Cardiff through a severe drought which occurred a few years later.
In 2002, Western Power Distribution acquired Llanishen and Lisvane reservoirs from Welsh Water, and submitted plans to fill in and build a housing estate on them. The plans were rejected after many residents came together to form the Reservoir Action Group (RAG), who campaigned against Western Power's proposal. The United States based parent company, Pennyslvania Power and Light, seems intent on destroying this wildlife haven - and only YOU can stop this from happening.
Currently, the reservoir is being drained, and the reservoir engineer who has been employed by RAG estimates that there will be a minimum of 10,000 cubic metres of silt on the bottom of the reservoir. If only a small fraction of this is washed into the Nant Fawr it will do enormous environmental damage to the stream and it will all end up in Roath Park Lake, adding to the silting problems there.
Llanishen Sailing Club has already stopped using the reservoir - there are security fences and security officers who patrol the grounds. AMs and MPs clamour to save it and campaigners aim to get it listed. If you’d like to get involved in the fight to save it you can write a letter to the company behind the plans and join Cardiff residents (and beyond) who are backing the campaign.
The letters will be collected by
http://yourcardiff.walesonline.co.uk and sent to Pennyslvania Power and Light.
Download the letter and email it to

Did you visit Llanishen Reservoir a lot in the past? It would be great to hear your stories of long lazy summers sat at the waters edge, enjoying the tranquility in the middle of a bustling City.
