PRESENTING UNIQUE PHOTOS OF OLD CARDIFF FOR OVER 15 YEARS!

RESOURCES PAGE

Essential books, maps, software, equipment, websites, and more

A selection of books about Cardiff.
A small selection of books from my ever increasing archive of materials.

Summary

My Cardiff related research collection comprises of books/booklets, birth / death / marriage and burial indexes, business and personal directories, census data, donations of images from the public, DVDs, leaflets, magazines, maps, negatives, newspapers, pamphlets, photocards, photojournals, postcards, VHS tapes and yearbooks.

I don't have the capacity or information to attribute a credit for everything contained within these pages as yet. But as I roll out each update, the list of credits and references continues to increase.  This page is part of that process.

Comprehensive Directory

Cardiff is blessed with two millennia of rich, diverse history.  Many famous authors such as Peter Finch, Brian Lee, John May, Dennis Morgan, and Stewart Williams, have all worked tirelessly to produce the photographic and factual compendiums that help us identify with and look back on the way Cardiffians lived in bygone days. Their work inspired me to create this website.

When I first created this page, it listed about 50 resources which were essential in developing my knowledge about basic web design, and Cardiff's history.  Since then, it has more than tripled in size and detail, with many new products and reviews.

Many books and orignal images can be found on eBay, or specialist shops such as AbeBooks and Stella & Rose's Books.  Car boot sales, antique shops and auction houses are also good places to build your own collection.

A Cardiff Notebook

Geoff Dart, the Former City and County Librarian, writes a concise introduction, comparing this small tome with George Owen's "The Taylors Cussion" - a similar book of miscellaneous and unrelated facts about Wales from the 16th century.

The compilers of this book have attained a high standard of accuracy and a very representative spread of facets of Cardiff's history over 1,900 years.

Bibliography of Cardiff Directories 1795 - 1978, A

The Survey of Cardiff was established in 1988 with the aim of promoting the study of the architectural and topographical history of the city. Cardiff has a wealth of material of the trade directory sort, extending over nearly 200 years. This is Occasional Paper No 4. of 4 issued by the survey.

The booklet provides a detailed bibliographical guide to Cardiff directories and publications, covering a larger area which includes information about the city. I've found it really useful in helping to track down rare items to add to my collection, and to reference my work.

Canton

The story of Canton is woven with a wealth of fascinating threads and this book, the first about the suburb in Cardiff, brings many of them to light. Accompanied by almost 200 photographs and illustrations, it begins with a brief look at the ancient history of the area, and then in five sections, concentrates on the period from 1850 to 1960. It explains how Canton, one of the oldest suburbs in Cardiff, has grown as part of the medieval settlement on the bank of the River Taff, and encourages residents to find out more about the 2,000 years of history the city has seen.

Cardiff before Cardiff

In the 1970s and early 1980s, local photographer Keith S. Robertson took hundreds of pictures of Cardiff and its people. They were subsequently left in a drawer in one of the city's municipal buildings, and forgotten about; presumed destroyed. Then in 2012, another photographer, Jon Pountney, found them purely by chance - he immediately realised their creative and social value. The result of his restorative work on the photographs and the reaction generated from the people portrayed, is what we have in this fascinating book. These powerful monochrome images, shown side by side with contemporary shots, show the people and streets of Splott and other areas of Cardiff during the 1970s and the early 80s in ways you'll never see again.

Cardiff In 50 Buildings

I’d like to start this review by thanking Amberley Publishing for kindly furnishing me with a copy of this excellent book.

John B. Hilling, author of ‘The Architecture of Wales’ and the superb “Cardiff and the Valleys: Architecture and Townscape”, presents you with a selection of 50 buildings that he feels should define the City of Cardiff.

From the ancient St John’s Church to the contemporary Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay, the author (and photographer David A. L. Hilling) will take you on a fascinating 2,000 year journey of grand architecture oozing in style, purpose, and longevity.

The author also recounts the events, actions, wranglings and unique challenges that led to the creation of these wonderful, world renowned brick, concrete, glass and steel statements of military, financial, industrial and political power. The succinct introduction gives the reader an easy to follow review of Cardiff’s past, before moving on to concise summaries of each building, which are accessible and make for captivating reading.

Over 100 high quality illustrations adorn the 96 pages. Of note are the rare images of the docks and churches; several of which I had not seen before. The book is full of fascinating facts and figures; so whether you’re a lifelong citizen of Cardiff, or just curious about architecture and memorials in general, this neat little paperback is highly recommended.

Cardiff Railway (The)

This is an excellent introduction to the Cardiff Railway, which was built by order of the rich and powerful Marquis of Bute, who wanted to break the Taff Vale Railway's (TVR) near total monopoly on coal transportation from the Rhondda valley mines. The Marquis' docks in Cardiff were explorting more coal than ever before, and this 6.5 mile railway was the final step in his attempts to control the flow of the black gold from the South Wales Valleys.  This book is recommended for anyone interested in the history of regional British railways, and this edition is 176 pages with photographs, drawings, illustrations and maps in the text.

Cardiff Yesterday

No list of resources would be complete without mentioning Stewart Williams' amazing Cardiff Yesterday series of books.  Without them to inspire me from an early age, this website would not exist.  Spanning 36 volumes, they are filled with over 7,000 rare images of the city from days gone by.  Every one of those images are accompanied by a detailed and fasinating caption that easily draws you into the scene depicted.

Of particular note are the extremely high quality of the images.  Not only are many of them presented for the very first time in this beloved series, their reproduction is the best rendition in print (closest to the original) ever seen in my opinion.  Some authors have reused the pictures and information in their own books in the past few decades, but sadly; the result is sometimes a watered down, low quality rip off!

Epson Perfection V850 Pro Film Scanner

When my grandfather passed away in 2013, he left me his old Epson V200 scanner, which could scan 35mm negatives or film. It was slow, and only capable of 4800dpi, but now I could start collecting negatives, and buying up the copyright to new images that otherwise I could not have been able to use. I also scanned thousands of family photos, and learnt all about sizes and types of film in the process. Just a few years later, I had amassed a huge variety of transparencies depicting Cardiff - some dating from the 1920s and physically quite large. The V200 couldn't cope anymore - so time to upgrade.

The V850 Pro is an amazing looking, well built and expensive feeling piece of kit.  It is capable of scanning negatives up to A4 in size at an optical resolution of 6400dpi and uses a dual focus system to get the sharpest results.  This is essential to me, as a lot of slides and film have deteriorated badly, and need digital restoration. The scanner is fast, quiet and allows you to automate your work.

Sometimes I buy up bagfuls of slides - hundreds in a bag. With the V850 I can pop 12 at time on the screen, and let the software churn out the results.

The backlight is very bright indeed, bringing out colours and details just not possible to see in cheaper, less professional scanners. If the film is curled, then the holders can come in useful, as they have anti newton ring (ANR) glass. However; I prefer to use a sperate piece of ANR glass and put it directly on top of the negatives, directly on the screen. The results are usually pretty stunning!

The V850 Pro has certainly made the laborious task of scanning images so much less hassle, and allowed me to add exclusive content to this site. If you have a huge collection of film and negatives, and want to see these images in literally a new light (like going from VHS to Blu Ray!) then I highly recommend the Epson V850 Pro (or it's slightly cheaper brother, the V800).
Sadly; the film holders that came with it were pretty useless, due to their design issues (they don't quite fit film that isn't perfectly cut) - the slide holder is perfect however.

From Sophia To Swalec: A History of Cricket in Cardiff

Published to coincide with the opening of the new state of the art SWALEC Stadium in 2008, this book offers a valuable insight into the history of the only first-class county cricket club in Wales. A section on the redevelopment of the ground, in preparation for an Ashes Test match in 2009, is one of the book's highlights. GlobalStats - Stat Counter

This website was one of the first I found when investigating responsive design back in 2014. I thought about building a mobile version of Cardiffians, but didn't like the idea of duplicating and maintaining two sites. Then I discovered 'Media Queries' - the core of responsive design.  The website needed upgrading, and the only way to do it was rebuild it from scratch.

Based on the results shown in the GlobalStats website, which showed 1080p climbing steadily into 2nd most popular display (1366 x 768px was 1st place, but dropping), I bought a cheap 1080p monitor to design on. I also decided that I needed to code for Chrome. Constantly fixing my site to work on the terrible Internet Explorer browser (aka Edge) was going to end!

It's now 2023, and although 1080p displays are still the 2nd most popular resolution, the number of users hover around just 10%. There has been a huge growth in dual monitor setups, 4K TVs, and high performance mobile devices with a plethora of different sized, ultra high resolution screens.

Thankfully, when I redesigned Cardiffians in 2015, I future proofed it to display correctly from 320p to 4K - and it still works today.

Grangetown

This selection of almost 200 photographs, maps and illustration explores the history of Grangetown down the years and celebrates the character and achievements of this fascinating suburb of Cardiff. We get a flavour of many aspects of late-Victoria era from the illicit Sunday drinking booths on the Marl to the industrial success, shown by images of the of the opening on the Clarence Road Swing Bridge in 1897. The bulk of the book then moves on to dealing with the themes of religion, education, business, the war years and sport.

History of St. John's Cardiff and the Churches of the Parish, A

St. John's is the oldest Church in Cardiff, being first mentioned in the charter of Nicholas ap Gwrgant about 1180, confirming the Chapel of the monks of Tewkesbury Abbey. The author covers 900 years of history in 22 incredibly well researched chapters, with an appendix providing details of the previous incumbents of St. John the Baptist, and even the history behind each of the bells. There are no illustrations in this publication; just facts followed by stories, followed by historical recountings from ancient scripts, followed by more facts!

Llandaff

Every village has a certain identity...a community feeling linked by school, church or shops, and Llandaff is no exception. Yet, thanks to its splendid Cathedral, this little village in the city of Cardiff, has the rare distinction of having city status all of its own, because of its status as the seat of the Bishop of Llandaff (but this status was never officially recognised).

Through 200 carefully selected photographs and illustrations this book shows how the Llandaff of today evolved from the old parish of hundreds of years ago. Sadly, many photos have been reproduced to a very poor standard, but this is easily made up for by the fascinating text that accompanies them.

Image of a scanning mask

Lomography DigitaLIZA 110 Film Scanning Mask

110 Film (aka 16mm, or Instamatic) was a very popular small format film cartridge used in the 1980s. It was a miniaturized version of Kodak's earlier 126 film. About 80% of my family's photos were taken wih 110 film, and there are thousands of pictures!

When I acquired my first film scanner, I discovered that there were no official holders for this format, from any scanner manufacturers. Even trying to find suppliers of 110 film storage sheets was difficult. Then I found this amazing scanning mask! You simply drop the strip of 110 film in, and it floats down to sit gently on the tiniest of ledges, allowing for a full scan of not just the image, but the whole frame! Pop the magnetised holder down, and it flattens the film to get an even sharper scan.

Try it yourself by comparing the results of a scan (using even a cheap scanner) to the print of the photo from 30 years ago.
You'll want to throw those old photo albums out, and start scanning your original instamatic negatives to reprint them again - the difference is like day and night.

Image of a scanning mask

Lomography DigitaLIZA 35mm Film Scanning Mask

135 Film (aka 35mm) was the standard medium film size for many decades. So much in fact, that full frame DSLR and Mirrorless cameras still use a 35mm sensor to this very day. Most film scanners are very well equipped to handle this format, either directly on the glass, using a holder, or via a motorised feeder. Then I encountered 126 negatives (which are the same physical size as 135 (35mm) film, but with a larger exposure area). I discovered that virtually no standard scanning holders were designed to show the whole image. As such - every scan is cropped using most 35mm masks.

Enter the DigitaLIZA 35mm. The tiny ledges on these scanning masks mean that barely half a milimetre on the top and bottom of the frame is in contact with the mask. This allows for a full beautiful scan of 126 film! So yes; it's designed for 35mm...but in my opinion, it should definately have been marketed as a 126 mask. A supurb piece of kit in my digital restoration arsenal.

Lomography DigitaLIZA 120 Film Scanning Mask

You're in full control of scanning large format negatives with these masks from Lomography. The magnetic mechanism holds the negatives in place so that you can scan them conveniently - in one endless film strip if need be. When I bought my scanner (the Epson V850 Pro) I found that the film holders were pretty poor, and curled a lot of negatives. However; this scanning mask has very thin edges that hold misshapenly cut negatives perfectly! I would not have been able to publish a lot of the older images on this site without this mask to help me get a decent quality scan first.

Lost Tramways of Wales: Cardiff

This is one of four volumes exploring the tramway history of Wales. Cardiff's tramways system had its origins in the horse tramways of the late 19th century and the first electric trams appeared in 1902. For the next 25 years the tram was to dominate the local streets, and this book shows how the system went from its heights, to its decline in the 1940s with the introduction of trolleybuses.

The author, a transportation expert, explores Cardiff's long-closed tramway, probes the significance of these vanished modes of transport, and the world where they were in regular use.

Paint Shop Pro 2020

Paint Shop Pro

I've been using this graphics design and photo editing software to work on graphics and photos for over two decades. I have always found it to be intuitive, fast, stable, powerful and full of features. The term 'photoshopped' is commonplace, and I like to buck the trend by saying - "No - I PSP'ed it". I understand why Adobe Photoshop is considered the best, but I also think it's the most expensive and difficult to use of most of the software packages out there.

Paint Shop Pro (originally developed by JASC, now owned by Corel) has been absolutely essential in helping me repair very badly damaged photos and negatives before publishing them. Of all the editing suites I've got installed, PSP is the first I open. I am far from an expert user, but confident that you can do most of the same things in PSP as you can in Photoshop (you can even install Photoshop plugins!).

Finally; there's the price. Photoshop is a available via £20 a month subscription. That's £240 a year. That would have cost me nearly £5,000 over 20 years. Paint Shop Pro 2023 Ultimate edition is currently (correct as of October 2023) a one off payment of £54 for the standalone edition (via Corel's website) or £90 on Amazon for the creative collection.

Railways of Cardiff

This profusely illustrated book tells the story of how in the 19th century, Cardiff's prosperity grew to a level not matched by anywhere else in the United Kingdom, thanks to the phenomenal, 'clean burning' efficient Welsh coal in the valleys just 15 miles north of the town. The wealth acheived by the magnates of the day, including of course the Marquis of Bute, was all thanks to the rapid and expansive development of the railway. Real Cardiff Three - The Changing City

Since the author began his capital trilogy in 2002, Cardiff has changed enormously. In this book, he checks out the new, from Torchwood to St David’s 2, while continuing his authorial dig, revealing the places and people who make the city what it is. Taff's Acre - A History and Celebration of Cardiff Arms Park

Cricket was a familiar mid 19th century sight on the park behind the Cardiff Arms Hotel. Then in 1876 the first Cardiff Football Club started practicing on this ancient grassland. By 1884 the Welsh Football Union had formed, and played a winning match against Ireland. Therein lay the beginnings of Cardiff Arms Park as a world-famous rugby ground.

This book traces the development and re-development of a ground which, for all its shortcomings of the past, occupies a special place in the hearts of rugby folk everywhere.

The Cardiff Story: A History of the City from its Earliest Times to the Present

From one of Cardiff's most prolific and well-known authors, this book provides the reader with important information about the city's geographical area, cultural history and political intrigue. It tells of invasions from the Romans and annexation by the English, through to the Georgian and Victorian era's many wars, and how these affected the way the city develop.

An historical and archaological insight and development of Cardiff over many years, from an unknown village to a large cultural and economic centre; this is an ideal book for people that want to understand the personality of the city, and its place in the world, as it was in 1990.

The Illustrated History of Cardiff's Pubs

It is sometimes said that the history of a town can be seen in its public houses, and indeed they are often among the oldest surviving buildings. Cardiff is no exception, and has a long history of brewing. In this fascinating survey, celebrated local historian, Brian Lee brings to life the history of Cardiff's hostelries. From the fairly salubrious to the downright dangerous, he plots their changing fortunes as the city itself has changed over the years.
